Long Awaited Overwatch Sequel Announced at BlizzCon

Overwatch

Overwatch 2, the eagerly-awaited follow up to Blizzard’s 2016 smash shooter, was officially confirmed at BlizzCon, the developer’s annual promotional conference.

Overwatch 2 Promises New Story Mode

Blizzard is faced with the difficult challenge of following up on a game that was originally meant to be endless, but with over 50 million players worldwide and a hugely successful Esports league, Overwatch 2 promises to be just as big a hit as its predecessor. The main attraction of the new title looks set to be its new narrative co-op mode, something that was notably missing from the first installment. With Overwatch’s rich vein of backstories to its eclectic gang of characters and sprawling universe, the new story mode was certainly on the wish list of the game’s fanbase.

The sequel will also feature another new game mode called Push. This is a kind of tug-of-war style game where the rope is a robot that opposing teams have to fight over. In addition to the new game modes, Overwatch 2 will also see the characters get a cosmetic upgrade, and you can compare these changes on the game’s official website

Changing the Future of the Sequel

Overwatch’s director Jeff Kaplan has set his sights high on what the future of this particular franchise means for other sequels in an ever-changing gaming environment. With its biggest competitor, Fortnite, completely rebooting last month to what Epic Games describes as “Chapter 2,” Blizzard is aiming to produce a sequel that can coexist with its predecessor, rather than replace it.

“It’s a huge game, and I think not only are we trying to do right by our players — current Overwatch fans who aren’t interested in Overwatch 2 — I’m hoping that we’re doing right by players of games that have sequels that have nothing to do with Overwatch. I hope we actually influence the industry a little bit,” said Kaplan in an interview with VG24.

Overwatch 2 is yet to receive an official launch date or price tag, but it a fall 2020 release, to coincide with the next BlizzCon, looks likely.
